With more than 17 years in the food and beverage industry, including five years at Food For Thought, Kacilynn Zimmerman brings a thoughtful, people-first approach to every event she touches. Known for her creativity, attention to detail, and passion for creating seamless guest experiences, Kacilynn believes hospitality is about more than logistics — it’s about connection.

In this reflection on her experience at Kinetic, she shares insights on intentionality, collaboration, and the evolving role of hospitality in creating meaningful experiences that leave a lasting impression.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend Kinetic, an experience created for professionals in the hospitality and event industry. One of the biggest themes throughout the event was connection. Not only to our work, but also to ourselves, our clients, and the people we collaborate with every day.

As someone in catering, it was valuable to step into conversations that focused on more than timelines and production schedules. The sessions explored topics like client relationships, accessibility in hospitality, creative growth, branding, collaboration, and the importance of staying grounded during demanding seasons.

A recurring takeaway was that hospitality is constantly evolving because people’s needs are constantly evolving. Today’s clients want experiences that feel intentional, thoughtful, and personal. They want vendors who understand how to anticipate needs before they are spoken and who create environments where every guest feels considered. One speaker described hospitality as “the art of anticipating a need before it is spoken,” and that idea stayed with me throughout the experience.

In catering, that can mean everything from thoughtfully accommodating dietary restrictions to creating seamless guest experiences and designing menus that feel connected to the atmosphere and emotion of the event itself. It’s a reminder that our role goes far beyond serving food; we’re helping create experiences people remember.

Another major focus throughout Kinetic was intentionality. Every part of the experience encouraged attendees to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with the purpose behind their work before the busy event season begins. There was also a strong emphasis on collaboration and communication, especially as productions become larger and client expectations continue to shift.

One discussion that resonated with me centered around how important it is for vendors to continuously adapt. Costs change, trends evolve, and client expectations grow more personalized every year. In hospitality, staying stagnant simply is not an option. The best experiences come from teams willing to listen, evolve, and work together to create something meaningful.

I also appreciated the smaller, more intimate environment of the event. It created space for honest conversations about burnout, creativity, boundaries, and maintaining joy within an industry that moves incredibly fast. Those conversations felt just as impactful as the educational sessions themselves.

I left the experience feeling recharged, refreshed, and ready for the season ahead. Not because it provided all the answers, but because it reinforced the importance of approaching hospitality with intention, adaptability, and genuine care for people.

At its core, great catering has always been about connection.

The food may bring people together, but it’s the thoughtfulness behind the experience that leaves a lasting impression.
